Potton grind out win over Burton

Potton secured a 2-1 win in a largely forgettable encounter with Burton Park Wanderers in the UCL Division One on Saturday.

If you thought Potton had a few selection problems — players injured or unavailable and so was only able to name two substitute s— spare a thought for lowly Burton’s new manager Dave Dent.

The visiting boss had eight goalkeepers registered to play but none were available. So he turned to former Potton United midfielder John Bowden to wear the goalies’ jersey.

With the advantage of the wind Potton made a good start in the second minute when Cory Cooper collected a loose pass from a Burton defender to slot the ball past Bowden for the opening goal. A long ball from keeper Will Cook found Sam Piesse who hard centre was turned over the bar by Cooper.

In a rare Burton attack Jordan Harvey saw his effort well saved by Cook as he was falling backwards. Danny Webb shot over the bar and Matt Chapman saw his fierce shot deflected off a defender hitting the inside of the post and rebounding to safety.

Shortly before the half hour Webb collected the ball near the halfway line, beat a couple of defenders and unleashed a fierce shot that gave Bowden no chance of saving — a quality goal out of keeping with the rest of the match.

Burton counter attacked with their impressive Dan Carter releasing the ball to catch Potton short at the back and, although Cook saved Harvey’s first attempt, he netted the second in the 36th minute.

Early in the second half Webb made a run down the right but his centre finished on top of the net. James Meredith headed wide from a corner and in moments later the referee turned down a penalty appeal for handball by a Burton defender, ruling the ball had hit the arm accidentally. From the resulting play Cooper headed over from close range. Just before the end Cooper shot wide.

In reality neither team threatened the goalie in the second half and for Potton the best that can be said was it was another three points. For Burton they battled well and made things difficult for Potton.

Potton United: Will Cook, Calum Forster, Harry Stafford, Shaun Faulkner, Luke Harradine, Aiden McClean (James Meredith), Sam Piesse, Matt Chapman, Cory Cooper, Nick Finney, Danny Webb
