A last minute goal condemned Potton to a 1-0 home defeat to Bourne in the UCL Division One on Saturday.

Three players missing due to suspension, one player unavailable because he became a father in the week and a midfield player breaking down in the warm up only tells part of the story. A missed penalty and other missed chances together with conceding a goal in the last minute add to the tale of woe.

But take nothing away from a young Bourne side that mastered the windy conditions much better than Potton and at times played some neat football.

Playing against the wind in the first half Potton were slow to get into their stride and a corner from Sam Wilson was held under the bar by Craig Lewis and then Lewis saved a shot from Craig Rook.

Potton started to get into the game and Alex Brown saved well from Joe Jordan and Gary Ansell-Carter fired over the bar. Jake Mason saw his effort saved by Lewis before Mark Ansell-Carter was shown a yellow card for a retaliatory push on a Bourne defender.

Jack Chandler played a through ball to Gary Ansell-Carter and he was well tackled before he could shoot. At the other end Wilson played a delightful through ball to Mason who saw his shot go just wide. A poor defensive back header by a Bourne defender was seized on by Gary Ansell-Carter and Brown came out well to save at his feet. Chandler was fouled in the penalty area but Calum Forster put his spot kick wide of the post.

The second half opened with Jordan shooting wide and a centre from Chandler eluding everyone before Bourne’s Mason shot wide. Gary Ansell-Carter tried a speculative shot from 30 yards that went over the keepers hide and just wide of the post. Forster then had a long range shot saved by Brown. Lewis saved from Henry Dunn and then substitute Adam Marsh’s cross was headed back across the goa by Kenny Smith to Gary Ansell-Carter but he could not get the ball out of his feet 6 yards from goal and the keeper saved injuring his defender in the process. Shots from Marc Umney and Marsh both went over the bar.

Two minutes into added time Bourne broke away and Keiran Blanchard was unmarked as he scored the winning goal from close range. Potton had one more attack but Jordan fired high and wide.
