Queens are the big Sunday League movers

Clive Milton’s Bedford Sunday League round-up

THERE were some interesting results in the Premier Division this week with Queensmen taking the opportunity to go second in the table whilst leaders Meltis Mexicans had a day off.

Queens visited Haynes and came away with a 3-1 win, which leaves them a point behind the leaders. Haynes went ahead with a penalty but this was pegged back by Dave Marlow with a left foot screamer.

Danny Hollis produced a bullet header to give Queens the lead, and in the second half the game was wrapped up when Jon Williets scored from the penalty spot.

Atletico Europa helped Queens’ cause by dropping a point at a rejuvenated London Road Supreme, whilst Oakley, who were the leaders a couple of weeks ago lost 5-3 to Caldecote Young Boys. Oakley are now fourth just behind Atletico, with London Road breathing down their necks in fifth place.

It was a hard fought game between London Road and Atletico. Atletico got on the score-sheet first after ten minutes but centre half Xenon equalised for Supreme. Atletico made it 2-1 from the penalty spot but again London Road came back with a Travis Joseph screamer to earn a point.

No joy for bottom club Esquires who played Lawson Park Rangers with the Rangers picking up both points after a 4-1 home win. Rangers are going through a re-building phase and this win should hopefully inspire them to keep going.

New Inn Biggleswade dropped out of Division One last week and so there were only three games played.

Unbeaten leaders Sharnbrook did not have a game so Old Hastingsburians took the opportunity to close the gap between themselves and the Casuals by beating bottom club Newtown Rangers 3-1.

21st GNG Tigers have strung together a couple of good results and are now third in the table after beating Stewartby 5-1 away. Kempston Hammers and Bird in Hand Bedford shared the points in their game and stay just above the bottom two places.

There were a lot of goals scored in Division Two with leaders Renhold travelling to Marston Reds and hammering them 6-0. It was 2-0 at half-time but Renhold put on the power in the second half to run out easy winners.

Andrew Latimer and Jamie Lovell scored a brace each, with the other goals coming from Nick Mistry and Shaun Cafferty.

Renhold’s man of the match was keeper Steve Champion who had to make one or two fine saves in both halves. Cranfield had a very good result against Caldecote Reserves spanking the Boys 7-2, whilst there were eight goals being scored in the game between Bumble Bee Flitwick and Mowsbury Athletic, Athletic scoring five of them.

This was a hard fought victory for Mowsbury, having to come back from behind three times. Starting the game with only nine men, two being late even after an extra hour’s lie-in, Mowsbury were soon behind to Bumble Bee, but Jimmy Carter equalised within five minutes. The Bees scored again only to be pegged back by half-time. It went on like this into the second half and at 3-3 Bumble Bee were reduced to ten men.

Mowsbury scored two late goals to make it 5-3 after a second Flitwick player got his marching orders. Jimmy Carter and Jordan Wright scored two apiece and the other goal was scored by Harry Weller. Ashley Tracy excelled in midfield for Athletic.

Manager of Mowsbury Athletic, David Carr, has been adjudged October’s Harrison & Rowley Manager of the month. In the only other game Wootton Wanderers beat Houghton Conquest 4-1.

Division Three is still being led by M & DH Clapham, who beat Meltis Rangers 4-1 to stay two points clear of Mile Road Casuals and Grafton Celtics, who both won their matches against Gardeners Arms Biggleswade and Bedford Allsters respectively.

Bedford Panthers got back on track with a 2-0 victory against Old Boys and Flitwick Eagles Sunday had a party at bottom club Dunton Reserves’ expense with a final score of 6-1. Jamie Quinney, manager of M&DH Clapham has been adjudged October’s League Manager of the month.

It is still tight in Division Four where there is not a lot separating the top teams, all being able to beat each other. This week Rose Biggleswade beat Santaniello’s who are going through a sticky patch after early season promise, the score being 4-0.

Goldington Rangers are second after beating Bird in Hand Lower Stondon, and Fox & Hounds Clapham disposed of BMC 5-2 to claim third spot. Bedford Cupids showed no kindness to bottom club Bellini’s by scoring ten with only one in reply, whilst Oakley Reserves did limit their win at one from bottom Bedford Albion by being content with a 4-1 victory.

Westoning Gijon continue to march onwards beating everyone in sight in Division Five. Their win at home to Bedford Old Boys by four goals to one made it six wins out of six, leaving Bedford Old Boys in second place two points behind and having played an extra game.

Sir William Peel Sandy are a further two points behind after travelling to Oakley Wanderers and coming away with a 5-3 result. The Peelers went a goal down but Tom Smith equalised, followed by goals from Dan Jones and Smith again to go in at half-time 3-1 up. The Peelers then took charge and soon produced number four when Adam Jones teed up Conor Green to find Oakley’s net. Wanderers pulled a goal back but Conor Green made it 5-2.

Oakley kept battling away and scored last but fell two goals short of a point. Michael Kalyan, David Johns and Stevie Yessian were the scorers for Oakley Wanderers.

AFC Kempston have their first point on the board after hanging on to a 2-2 draw at home to Alfa Oakley. Shillington Pirates Reserves are becoming draw specialists with their third draw out of six matches. It was 1-1 against Salento. Blackbirds Flitwick are safely in mid table after their 4-2 win against AF Mato.

In the Under-21 Division Brickhill Wanderers ‘A’ versus Shefford Saints caught the eye. Saints came to Russell Park and retained their unbeaten record to leap-frog Wanderers ‘A’ into second place after winning 4-1, two points behind Hitchin Town. Hitchin didn’t play this weekend.

Sacred Heart entertained Leighton Corinthians Seniors, perhaps a little too much as Leighton beat the Heart 3-1 to go fifth in the table. Watling Youth were hoping to get some points off Brickhill Wanderers ‘B’ but again fell short by one goal in a nine goal match which found Brickhill going home happy leaving Watling Youth stuck at the bottom with ‘null point’.

There are two Under 21 League Cup ties being played this coming Sunday afternoon, Sacred Heart play Hitchin, whilst Luton Central host Shefford Saints while there will be a full league programme in the morning.
