Sandy Ladies’ poor start to the season continued with a fifth straight defeat on Saturday.

Yet bearing in mind the team had only 11 players available at kick off and two of them were carrying injuries and probably shouldn’t have played, it was a remarkable performance.

The home team on the other hand had a squad of 18, so with five subs available could regularly bring on fresh legs with the rolling subs system in place,

Bishops Stortford played down the slope in the first half and Sandy were under a lot of pressure in the first 25 minutes with Amie in goal and the back four of Kirsty, Chloe, Jade & Jenny having to work incredibly hard. They did well to only concede one goal on 19 minutes despite the pressure.

Sandy got more into the match as Kayleigh and Sophie, supported by Katie and Faye on the wings, fought back enabling Loren and Amber to threaten on the break on several occasions.

After 35 minutes Jenny’s injury from the week before forced her off the pitch, but it was really good of her to turn up to make sure Sandy had a starting eleven. She was replaced by Claire who arrived 20 minutes into the match.

Sandy changed their formation at half time but unfortunately conceded a second goal within a couple of minutes of the restart to an absolutely cracking shot that gave Amie no chance.

Sandy heads never dropped though and they kept battling hard. Indeed it could easily have been 3-2 with a bit of luck within 10 minutes of the home team’s second goal, as two great corners from Katie found Kayleigh but her headers were both saved. Amber hit the post from Katie’s pass, and Loren and Chloe both had shots on goal but unfortunately none went in and Bishops Stortford weathered the storm.

With the slope behind them Sandy had the better of the second half with Amber a constant threat and she worked so hard that she earned the Player of the Match award.

Chloe had to come off with about 12 minutes left but Jenny bravely went back on so Sandy still had 11 players on pitch at all times. But the lack of choice and ability to make change certainly had a bearing on the result despite Bishops Stortford rotating their subs to keep their team fresh.

Sandy have a week off this weekend so hopefully some of the injured/ill will be back but are then due to play Bishops Stortford again on October 25 at Sandy Upper School with a 2pm kick off.

Sandy: Amie Fage, Kirsty Fylling, Chloe Reeves, Jade Anderson, Jenny Holt (Claire Ashwell) , Katie Seldon, Kayleigh Bennett, Sophie Webb, Faye Prout, Loren Ellard & Amber Williams.
