With Sandy Ladies bottom with just a single point it was always going to be tough playing second placed Harvesters but they put in a terrific performance to earn a 1-1 draw.
Sandy started really well and went one up in the first minute when Sophie put Katie through and Amber latched onto the rebound from Katie’s shot to open the scoring.
With the wind and slight slope in their favour Sandy pressed Harvesters through most of the first half but couldn’t extend their lead.
Harvesters were dangerous on the break & had attempts on goal but none were on target as the defence of Jenny, Jade, Jordan & Chloe kept the visitors away from Amie but when required Amie was always alert and, as always, very proactive in goal.
Kayleigh and Sophie were very solid in midfield supported on the wings by Claire & Faye both of who caused Harvesters problems in support of Amber and Katie up front.
Sandy were clearly up for this, obviously fed up with a long list of narrow defeats & worked their socks off to try to extend their lead & keep Harvesters, who are a powerful team, at bay.
Amber had to come off after just 17 minutes with a knee problem and was replaced by Naomi and Kirsty went on for Jenny at right back with about seven minutes to half time but neither change affected Sandy’s momentum.
In the second half Amber came back on for Claire but the visitors obviously had the benefit of the wind and slope and so pegged Sandy back although the home team were still dangerous on the break. In a three minute period from 62 minutes onwards they had a series of corners and several attempts at goal but unfortunately the Harvesters keeper was in fine form.
Jenny came back on for Sophie and Claire for Naomi after about 68 minutes to try and give the team a bit of help with fresh legs but the lead remained a slender one goal until, with less than two minutes to play, Harvesters broke down the right and equalised with an absolutely cracking shot that left Amie with no chance at all & this was probably the visitors only shot on target the whole match.
A terrific performance after a difficult & disappointing first half of the season that should leave the team feeling very positive about 2016.
It was impossible to choose a player of the match when all 13 players were so brilliant on the day and Karen Varley also warrants a mention for turning up in her kit, despite being injured, just in case the team was short.
Team: Amie Fage, Jenny Holt (Kirsty Fylling), Jordan Rockall, Jade Anderson, Chloe Reeves, Claire Ashwell, Kayleigh Bennett, Sophie Webb, Faye Prout, Amber Williams (Naomi Clark) & Katie Seldon – sub not used Karen Varley
Sandy next match is at home to Letchworth on January 10 with a 2pm kick off at Sandy Upper School.
