Under-strength Arlesey slip to Northwood defeat

An under-strength Arlesey defended pretty well on Saturday but a well taken free kick gave visitors Northwood a 1-0 victory.

The Blues found themselves without several players for this Southern League Division One Central fixture. To counter this they welcomed Matt Hall into the squad from Leighton Town.

Northwood, who beat Arlesey heavily on the opening day of the season, pressed forward with the wind behind them from the start. With the gloom gathering the lights had to be put on after just seven minutes.

Northwood were being confined to long range efforts as Rob Hasting hit a long range shot that Nick Thompson gathered. At this time Arlesey were struggling to get out of their half.

In the second half Northwood started pressing again and five minutes in gained a rather unnecessary free kick in a central position about 25 yards out. Thompson lined his wall up but Michael Murray stepped up and hit a really good free kick over it and it flew past his outstretched hand into the top corner of the net to give the visitors the lead.

The Blues tried to get back into the game and it became a bit of a midfield battle, George Nicholas was booked for a foul on Nathan Olukanmi as the rain began to fall heavily. Dave Deeney bounced a good ball in from the free kick but Laurencin claimed it well. A good move through the centre sent Deeney through but Laurencin came out quickly and claimed the ball at the edge of his area.

A cross from the bye line by Olukanmi found Sam Willett who crossed back in but the ball flicked up in the wind allowing the keeper to gather.

When Northwood got the ball they were noticeably slowing down the game. This was emphasised as Rob Hastings was injured by the touchline by the main stand. He was treated then went off on the stand side and substituted but the ref allowed him to cross the whole pitch to go off by the dug outs.

Willett put a good ball in that was well taken by the keeper on the edge of his area in front of Wilson, and he also did well claiming the ball at the feet of Olukanmi.

Another good move saw the ball come to Tarum Dawkins who shot across the goal and just past the far post although a very tight offside was given.
