Biggleswade United Director of Football Guillem Balague feels the signing of ex-Chelsea midfielder Enrique de Lucas is just the beginning of something special.
De Lucas – formerly of FC Barcelona’s famed youth academy, plus a host of La Liga clubs – signed for the Spartan South Midlands League side on Monday, despite retiring last May.
Balague, who appears frequently on Sky Sports as a football pundit, revealed the 36-year-old opted out of retirement, such was his enthusiasm for the revolution at United.
The ex-Premier League and La Liga star has yet to join up with his team-mates, but Balague is confident that his addition will give the club an instant boost on the field.
Balague said: “When I asked him what he was doing he said he was interested. He’s been hearing more and more about it and he was really keen on being part of it.
“I said why don’t we get the paperwork in place and you can come and play for us.
“There is such an amount of experience that he carries with him. Immediately he is our best player.
“He carries the love of football with him. He’s so enthusiastic about it because he understands what we are trying to do.”
Since taking up his position at United, Balague has been inundated with support from a host of the biggest names throughout the world of football.
Amongst others, Balague has received signed shirts from Lionel Messi, Pep Guardiola and Xabi Alonso along with good luck messages from Premier League managers.
He added: “I arrived at Biggleswade United and I knew I was going to have to get some friends to give a hand.
“You will be amazed about the response of all of them.”
