Young Boys lift cup in extra time thriller

CALDECOTE Young Boys lifed their first ever Sunday cup in a dramatic final against Luton side St Joseph’s at Biggleswade United on Sunday.

The Young Boys started the game well and created the game’s opening chances early into the first half a little while later the ball hit a St Joseph’s player on the hand but the referee turned down the penalty appeal. The ball was crossed into the box and there was Ricky Aris at the back post on his own a couple of yards out and headed the ball over the crossbar.

Tom Cookman had a chance give the Young Boys the lead with a header from an acute angle but he put it the wrong side of the post, Half way through the first half Caldecote gave away a free kick 25 yards from goal from which the St Joseph’s player rattled the crossbar.

The Young Boys should have gone into the break up but Ricky Aris slid his shot wide of the post at the end of a half in which the side had created seven great chances to score.

St Joseph’s had a period where they were putting a bit of pressure on the Young Boys’ defence by having a few corners on the trot. But Caldecote weathered the little storm and started to play their football again, creating more chances from Tom Cookman Jack Boyd and Lee Bilcock.

With the game 0-0 and looking like it was going into extra time Jack Boyd had a great chance to win the game but blasted the ball high over the goal and stand.

The game went into extra time and the Young Boys were confident that they could get a goal to win the game but with the weather changing all the time from sunshine to hailstones it affected the play of both teams until half way through the first period of extra time when the St Joseph’s striker picked up the ball outside the penalty area and had a shot on goal which beat Nath Buckland to put them ahead.

The Young Boys had to push on looking for a equaliser and eight minutes from time they did so when a cross into the box was flicked on and into the net.

Then four minutes from time Ricky Aris ran down the line and crossed the ball into the near post where Jack Boyd was there to overhead kick the winner for the Young Boys.
