Battle for pool

Sandy was stepping up its campagin to beat Biggleswade in the battle for East Bedfordshire’s proposed swimming pool 25 years ago this week.

The chair of governors at Sandy Upper School had made contact with Mid Beds Council to express an interest and Sandy Mayor David Jaegar told the Chronicle at the time he would do all he could to bring the indoor pool to the town.

However, Biggleswade Mayor Charles Cook had pledged that the pool would go to Sandy “over his dead body” despite the fact that Stratton Upper School had pulled out of the race. Biggleswade Town Councillors criticised Stratton for rejecting the plan so quickly but they pledged to continue the fight to keep the pool in their town.
