The Biggleswade Specials

This photo belonged to Winifred Whiteman who lived in Biggleswade High Street and was well-known in the town. It shows members of the Biggleswade Special Police Force in 1940, volunteers who were important for the war effort as they allowed the regular police to carry out other duties. The picture was taken behind the police station.

In the back row, standing are Alfred Stone, Frank Powell, Sid Smith and Charles Wilkinson. In the middle row are Cyril Larkinson, Cecil White, Percy Wilkin, Cliff Page, George Styles, Arthur Butcher, Sid Ashwell, Henry Arger, Albert Smith and Bob Brookbanks. And in the front row are Harry Smith, William Brooks, Herbert Crooks, Charles Larkinson, HQ Inspector, Joe Dobson, Charles Woodward, Walter Cooper and Harold Boness.
