Gamlingay footballers recalled

Two people got in touch with us regarding our photo of young football players at Gamlingay published in Memory Lane on May 30.

Rob Whitbread called to say that although he didn’t play football himself, he went to school with the boys in the picture and believes it was taken in around 1945/46. David Allen who looks after Gamlingay’s historical photo archive also contacted us to say he thinks it was 1948, coincidentally the year that Rob left school (before the village college was built).

The names are agreed on however. From left to right are: Lawrence (Lol) Titmus, Brian (Darchy) Darlow, Bill Smith, John Cavey, Fred Meeks (kicking the ball), Alec (Chedder) Deeble, Ron Busby, Tony Jarvis and Ken Hare.

The boys are all in their eighties now and sadly John Cavey and Ken Hare are deceased. Rob played cricket with Ken at Waresley until they were in their fifties.

Thanks go to Rob, David and Ken Page who originally supplied the photo.
