Magnificent men and their flying machines

Memory Lane has received a letter from Mrs Freda Course who now lives in Norfolk and saw our 1940s photo of Dunton Model Aeroplane Club (March 8, 2013).

She was able to name the two unrecognised men as Robert Course, her late husband who co-founded the club with Jack White, and Charlie Edmonds who is standing next to Cliff Gates. Charlie lived at Middlesex Farm, Dunton.

She says: “My husband, who unfortunately died seven years ago aged 93 was the son of Mr A E Course who owned Newton Grove and Newton Bury farms and employed a lot of men from the village. He also gave the money for the first memorial hall in Dunton.”

She can recall her husband building bigger aircraft at home which had engines in and which they would fly in the meadow at Newton Grove.

The club used to meet at Dunton Village Hall until at least 1952.

Cliff Gates and Jack White, who appear in the Dunton Model Aeroplane Club photo, were also involved in the Biggleswade Model Aeroplane Club at around the same time.

The two photos of Biggleswade Model Aeroplane Club published here were supplied by Cliff and taken in 1950.
