The once stately home of Cople

MARTIN DEACON of the Bedfordshire and Luton Archives Record Service has kindly supplied Memory Lane with a number of local articles of interest and we are delighted to publish the first here. BLARS is based in the Riverside Building at County Hall, Bedford and has archives dating back to 1116. You can visit over three thousand pages of local history on their website at: http://www.bedford.gov.uk/archive.

The photograph above is of Cople House in the 19th century when it was owned by the Barnard family, Bedford bankers for nearly a century between 1855 and 1947. Now Woodlands Close, it was destroyed by fire in 1971, leaving the stables.
