Poll Tax was on the Chron

The Biggleswade Chronicle launched a competition to ease the burden of one local person’s poll tax 25 years ago this week.

As the country made the switch from the old rates to the controversial tax, the Chronicle was readying itself for a massive entry, particularly from pensioners and those on low incomes, in the hope to solve their poll tax worries for a year.

The competition consisted of two simple question and answer quizzes with answers to be accompanied by special coupons from the newspaper and readers could enter as many times as they liked.
