Riverside revamp was planned

Biggleswade’s old riverside walks were the subject of plans for a major facelift 25 years ago with the expectation of turning them into a top tourist attraction.

When the work was done, it was hoped they would fill the missing link in a network of Mid Beds paths stretching from Woburn to Gamlingay.

It was planned to clear away nettles and weeds, put in wooden footbridges and upgrade the paths. Town councillors hoped the walks would become a key leisure amenity for the town.

At the time the report was published on June 23, the town council restoration committee that was set up to oversee the project was asking for help from as many different bodies as possible for long term funding to keep costs as low as possible.
