Sandy siege

Police had to call in armed reinforcements and seal off a road in Sandy 25 years ago this week after a local man threatened paramedics who were trying to help him, arming himself with two swords and a ten-foot snake.

He had taken a powerful concoction of prescription drugs and alcohol after the death of a friend and had fallen unconscious at which point an ambulance was called. But once revived, he became violent.

It was seven hours before police eventually stormed the building, partly because at the time they believed he also had a machine gun (although this proved unfounded).

He was arrested and appeared in St Albans Crown Court where his defendant said that his behaviour had been completely out of character and only brought about by his friend’s death. He was put on probation for two years.
