Sutton club closure sorrow

A village youth club closed its doors 25 years ago this week because pleas for help went unanswered.

Organisers of Sutton Youth Club found they could not cope without extra volunteers and Wendy Appleton, who had formed the club 16 months before, expressed fears that youngsters would be forced to hang around the village or simply stay at home.

“There’s nothing for them to do in the village” she said “so it’s a shame it has closed.”

She hoped that one day the club could be reformed but thought it unlikely to happen in the near future.

“It is very difficult to get commitment. We appealed for more help but nothing happened” she said.

At one stage the club attracted up to a dozen youngsters aged between nine and 16 but interest waned as the club struggled to find helpers and activities on offer fell.

Today there is a youth centre situated in the village’s Robin Hood Lane.
