Who are the victuallers?

The two men on the right are John Wells, who was chairman of Charles Wells, the Bedford Brewers and Jim Howe (now deceased) who was licensee of The Plough at Bleak Hall until 1981. The Plough closed in 1997.

The group is pictured in front of a Greene King pub whose location is unknown.

One of the chairmen of the Biggleswade & District Licensed Victuallers Protection Association was Dan Albone whose name appears on an advertisement in the history society’s archives which was published on January 12, 1906.

“As far as I am aware they are still running, but the last record I have is 1999. Licensees these days are rarely of long standing” says Ken.
