Biggleswade win third on spin to edge to safety

Biggleswade took a massive stride towards avoiding relegation from Hertfordshire League 2 after a comprehensive home win over Broxbourne IIs on Tuesday.

Fielding an unchanged team for the fifth consecutive match Biggleswade were seeking a third victory in a row.

At string five Tony Rumbold made a solid start against James Davenport, taking the first game 15-10 before edging a close second game 15-13. Victory was sealed with a 15-4 win in the third.

Skipper Dan Easton at number three against Ben Huxstep was staring at defeat after losing both the first two games to 12 points. Easton, showing great grit and determination, then took both the third and fourth 15-10 and capped an excellent comeback by taking the fifth 15-11.

At string one Jay Ledger faced James Clyne. Ledger was unfortunate to lose the first game tie-break 17-15 but bounced back with a tie-break win (16-14) in the second. With Clyne looking to be in discomfort with a leg injury Ledger took the third 15-7. However, following a change of shirt, Clyne stepped up a gear to take the fourth 15-7 and in the fifth Clyne continued to play excellent squash winning 15-7.

Simon Gray at string four faced Amber Marshall. Marshall took the first 15-11 before Gray, using all his experience, came back to take the next three games 15-9, 15-9, and 15-11 to seal the win Biggleswade required.

Owen Ledger at string two faced Matt Steele and struggled to find any width or length in the first game losing 15-5. A big improvement in game two levelled the match (15-12). Steele took the third comfortably 15-7 before Ledger found some excellent winners levelling with a 15-12 win in the fourth. In the decider Ledger continued to play some excellent winners and with Steele looking tired Ledger completed a fantastic 15-8 win win the fifth.
