Spirited Biggy showing but they take a battering

Despite showing spirit and passion Biggleswade lost 61-0 to Lutterworth in Midlands 2 East (South) on Saturday.

Biggleswade were decimated by injuries in the mid-week Bedfordshire Cup against Dunstablians under lights which they also lost. They were forced to dig deep into their reserves to find players to plug the gaps.

Forty-nine year old Ian Flack was called up to partner the much younger Tom Hill in the second row. Third team captain Dave Tyson came in at prop. All gave 100% and their enthusiasm was infectious.

But Biggleswade started badly and were three tries down within a quarter of an hour and spent the rest of the match on a damage limitation exercise.

They were against the strong wind in the first 40 minutes and struggled to get out of their own half. Kicking into the wind was a lottery although stand in scrum half Luke Haverley did an excellent job with penalty kicks from the hand.

Nearly 40 points down by the break another record score against looked a real possibility. Lutterworth did get a couple of lucky interceptions for soft tries but generally with the elements at their back Biggleswade made Lutterworth work hard for further scores.

The final tally was 11 tries against but on a tricky day for goal kicking there were only three successful conversions.

In another rare appearance Harry Hogan played in the backrow alongside regulars Michael Haddow and Liam Dunne. Their combined tackle count must have been enormous.

Amongst the regulars Michael Hall returned at fly-half making his usual sorties into the middle of the opposition defence. He also saved a certain try with a turnover under the posts when another score looked odds on.

Centre Alex Borg went closest to scoring a try for Biggleswade with a penetrating run which sent the Lutterworth defence scuttling back to prevent him going over.

Biggleswade did miss some tackles and not do as well in the set pieces as they might have done. But Lutterworth were simply bigger, better and bolder in defence and attack. Whenever Biggy had seemed to have stemmed the tide there was another Lutterworth player in support to carry on the move and stretch the Biggy defence to the limit.

This week there is the postponed trip to Leicester to take on Vipers who Biggleswade beat in a high scoring match way back in September by 35 points to 29.
