Biggleswade Colts lost 29-12 in a highly competitive EMMRE league clash at Oundle on Saturday.

The combined squad of U17 and U18 colts only lost simply due to the number of occasions that the backs failed to exploit the space that was created.

This was the closest game yet between the two sides in recent years. With the hosts having just one sub and Biggy two, plenty of game time was available to all players.

Biggy were unable to gain momentum in the first half. The first tries was conceded in the 15th minute via a strong run down the Biggy left. Then a second was scored in the 28th minute before two minutes later a fantastic box kick on halfway bounced a few times before being collected on the move. A despairing tackle by the last Biggy man appeared to have thwarted the attack but the player was able to roll over and place the ball over the line.

Kashane was frequently able to gain ground, Ollie T had a decent game filling in at 15 and Tom R was a typical scrum-half, annoying the heck out of his opposite number!

At the restart it was only Jacob who was prepared to break the line and hammer the man in possession, yet with the ball quickly recycled by the hosts it wasn’t long before they went over for a converted score near the posts.

A rare dropped ball by Oundle saw the Biggy boys hold their nerve and move the ball along the line. Three passes later and Callum C burst through to score left of the sticks. This gave Biggleswade belief, with Tom A and Brook happy to then take on the Oundle lads with strong runs.

One more break by Oundle with five minutes remaining followed to take them to 29 points before a final push by the visiting Biggy boys. An excellent kick to the corner by Callum and a huge clearance by Connor from a lineout collected by Derek were further highlights before Callum again darted over for a second, converted, score.

It was a very good effort from the Biggy youngsters, with Callum C kicking well from hand and he, Luke and Kashane lively with the ball in hand. Harry again showed that his lineouts can consistently hit the mark whilst it was great to see Shay and Connor both make their return to Biggleswade .

Squad: Oli Field, Derek Izzard, Jack Lamb, Jacob Martin, Liam Panton, Tom Roberts, Connor Trudgill, Tom Allwright, Callum Cochrane, Brook Collett, Harry Cooke, Kashane Davies, Luke Fye, Steve Thompson, Ollie Trudgill, Connor Wilson, Shay Hancock.

Biggy U12s faced tough opposition as they went down 55-50 to Hitchin. With the visitors having a massive aquad, they were able to rotate their team.

Biggleswade went 30-5 up with some direct running, the best try coming from Quinn ran nearly the whole length of the field to score.

Hitchin rang the changes and took the lead with some great passing moves. Despite injuries and tiring legs, Biggy fought back to level but a last minute try sealed a win for the visitors. Tries came from Will (4), Luke (2), James M (2), Tom and Quinn.
