Tennis clubs throw open their doors

Twenty tennis clubs across Bedfordshire are throwing their doors open for free open days on the eve of Wimbledon on Sunday.

They include Bedford, Sharnbrook, Pavenham, Harrold, Ampthill and Woburn and they will be open from 2pm-5pm.

Bedford Lawn Tennis Club coach Nimer El-Saleh, 30, began playing tennis at just six and, after studying Sports Psychology at university, he qualified as a tennis coach and has been teaching students in Bedford for the past seven years.

The Queens Park coach said: “Everyone is welcome to come along, old and young, experienced or a complete beginner.

“The emphasis will be on fun with target practice and a speed gun to measure your serve.

“Plus if you are interested in joining you can chat to myself or club members.”

Penny Canvin, volunteer on Sharnbook’s committee, said: “New members are always welcome, of any age or ability.

“I first came here six years ago and was a bit nervous about being able to play well enough but the members and coach are all so friendly and supportive that I have never left!.
