Travelling in time to past childhoods

DISCOVER what life would have been like for children during the Second World War at a Time Travellers Go event.

Youngsters can take part in an obstacle course and a children’s drill as well as making their own gas masks. They can also find out about air raids, rationing and evacuation.

The historical sessions are just some of the events to mark the refurbishment of Wrest Park in Silsoe.

Highlights of the restoration, which was revealed in full at the start of the month, include the late Victorian style rose garden, the Italian garden with its layout from 1882 and replanted English elms. The walled garden now contains a children’s play area, a visitor centre, a shop and a cafe.

Entrance tickets to the house and grounds cost £8 for adults, £7.20 for concessions and £4.80 for children aged five to 15. Family tickets cost £20.80 and English Heritage members get in free.

Everyone will be charged an additional £1 this weekend to fund Time Travellers Go, which takes place from Thursday (August 11) to Sunday (August 14) from 11am to 5pm.
