Parents, carers, pupils, staff and governors attended the opening ceremony whoch included the planting of a Laxton Superb tree, a Bedfordshire variety of apple tree.

The garden was designed by Frosts Garden Design and Construction free of charge, and was also funded through a grant from Central Bedfordshire Council.

Other donations including one from Sainsbury’s meant that the Hitchmead Road school could also buy a greenhouse and other gardening equipment.

Headteacher Julie Mudd said: “At Ivel Valley School we are always searching for new ways to engage and enthuse our pupils, and this specially-designed garden does just that.

“This fantastic new resource supports the delivery of the school’s curriculum for children with complex learning needs.

“It also enables all pupils – including those with the most severe forms of disability – to fully participate in a range of enjoyable, fulfilling and challenging outdoor activities.”

There are also plans to share the garden with other schools in the area.
