Pupils get down to work and make a difference for their community

Stondon Lower School held its first Make A Difference Day (MAD) on Wednesday, June 15, which involved the children completing a range of activities.

This included cleaning toys for the Stondon Stompers pre-school, planting pots for the church, litter picking on the village recreation field, cleaning a police car from RAF Henlow and inviting members of the community and groups into school for a cream tea during the afternoon, supported by year four children.

Each child also planted a tomato plant and this will be issued as a gift to someone in the community.

The school’s eco greenhouse - made from recycled plastic bottles - was refurbished and the wildlife garden area was extended, as well as general tidying and weeding around the school grounds.

Growing Strong Nurseries of Hitchin and Savins Nurseries of Lower Stondon kindly donated a huge selection of plants and resources on the day.

The day was supported by lots of volunteer helpers, neighbours, parents, RAF Henlow and governors.

Anglian Water’s educational team were also present supporting eco activities, working towards the Eco Schools’ Green Flag Award, the school having previously been awarded bronze and silver.
