Restoration approval for ironwork in historic garden

Plans to enhance one of our tourist attractions have been assisted by a positive planning decision.

The Swiss Garden in Old Warden is being restored to its 18th century glory.

And Central Beds Council has given planning permission for some of the work to begin.

Councillors agreed that wrought iron gates and a screen can be dismantled. There will then be repair and restoration of the ironwork. It will be painted and re-erected on new footings with the stone base blocks.

The application was discussed by the council’s development management committee on Wednesday, August 15 because the process involves removing a mature oak tree that is damaging the screen.

Councillors recommended to the applicant that another oak tree is planted in the grounds as a replacement but this was not a condition of approval for the application.
