Balague: Top quality coaching is the way forward in England

Regular readers of this weekly rant will know how I constantly bang the drum for the vital importance of top quality coaching linked with the most modern facilities possible if this country's aspirations of returning to the top of the football tree are ever to be realised.

More than two years ago Biggleswade United formed a partnership with the Knights Templar School which involved us using their facilities while in return we offered top quality UEFA Pro Licensed coaching to their pupils.

On March 30 I will be honoured to be the guest of honour at the County Schools Final at the County Ground, Letchworth where the school’s Under 18 side that benefited so much from our coaching will play against Dame Alice Owen’s School from Potters Bar.

To say I am proud doesn’t even begin to describe my feelings. I am proud of the youngsters that showed the dedication, commitment and perseverance to take them down the road and equally in awe of our magnificent coaching staff, led by our Academy chief, Fran Constancio that helped light their footballing path.

And a combination of coaching, positive mental attitude and total commitment means we are climbing ever upwards following another two home wins. Victory against Hoddesdon on Saturday followed by a win over Crawley Green on Tuesday takes our unbeaten run to 12 games with 30 points and clear in fourth place in the table.

With 12 games left we now have third place in our sights but will need to win all our four games in hand and hope that the top three drop points if we are to harbour any thoughts of finishing the season in a higher position.

After the massive publicity that followed the arrival of our new striker, Norwegian television commentator and celebrity Simen Moller, it was wonderful to see him hit the floor running with his first goal when he headed home after coming on from the bench.

Next up on Saturday are Sun Sports who we have met three times this season with all matches finishing level at one goal apiece, although one of those games culminated in the penalty shoot that saw us eliminated from the FA Vase.

Then on Tuesday we welcome St Margaretsbury to Second Meadow for the home part of a league fixture that will see us lock horns with the Herts side twice in five days. See you there.
