Guillem Balague: a step in the right direction

Defeat is always a difficult pill to swallow, but our penalty shoot out loss in the Beds Senior Cup against Arlesey Town, who play a league above us, is proof positive that we are moving in the right direction.

Champions League commitments meant I was unable to attend the game but my spies tell me it was without question our most solid performance of the season and just reward for all the work we have done in training in defending set plays.

Slackness in this department cost us two points in our previous match against St Margaretsbury and while it would have been wonderful to get a goal on Tuesday, a clean sheet against Southern League Central opponents bodes very well for the future.

Having put in place our major sponsorship deals with Top Eleven and Adidas we are now striving to establish even greater links with the community.

Subway are opening a new branch in the town and they will be holding their staff meetings at out clubhouse and we would also like to constantly remind the community that our clubhouse is available for hire by anyone for all events including weddings, private parties and meetings etc.

We are also tentatively looking – licences permitting – at the possibility of holding music nights at the club, perhaps after a match, and we are also always open to receive any suggestions about what you would like from us.

On the pitch we need more coaches and more local youngsters, particularly for our under 16 side but also because we would like to field an under 18 side next season

What we also always need is more volunteers to help us build Biggleswade United into what we would like it to become, a club with a true community spirit that can boast high standards, on and off the pitch, and be an asset everyone can be proud of.

To that end we are constantly talking with the local authorities and the FA with a view to improving our facilities because eventually we would like all of our sides to be able to train together in one place.

On Saturday we face third placed London Colney at Second Meadow before travelling to Sun Sports on Tuesday. See you there.
