Potton United lacked a cutting edge as they lost 2-0 at ON Chenecks on Saturday – their opponents now just need one point to finish UCL Division One runners-up.
For their strong second half performance the home side deserved their victory.
For Potton it was the same tale for the latter part of this season — too many silly fouls committed and in attack they lacked penetration and on Saturday failed to really test the Chenecks keeper.
Ben Lewington made an early run and saw his effort blocked. otton forced a couple of corners and from one Sam Kelly fired high over the bar. Minutes later the ball fell to Kelly and this time his 25 yard shot only just went over the bar.
Gary Ansell-Carter had a shot easily saved and from Cheneck’s first corner Tom Caton headed wide. Potton were playing some good passing football but the attacks came to nothing.
Ben Foster played the ball Ben Diamond who saw his fierce shot pushed onto the post by Craig Lewis for a corner.
Then from a corner in the 36th minute Chenecks had a couple of headers at goal and with the ball still in the air Sam Watkins headed home from close range.
Potton retaliated and a good run down the right by Calum Forster ended with a corner that came to nothing. Adam Spalling had a shot that went wide and at the other end Kenny Smith had an effort turned away for a corner. So United undeservedly trailed at the half-time whistle.
At the start of the second half Kenny Smith had a weak shot and then shot over the bar. Ansell-Carter did well to block a shot from Ash Ogden. Potton then started to concede some free kicks that allowed Chenecks to enjoy more possession. Ben Foster played in Watkins whose shot was blocked and then Smith almost diverted a corner into his own net.
Calvin Budd’s free kick was flicked on by Ben Lewington but Watkins was unable to keep his shot down. Diamond took a free kick and found the unmarked Ben Lewington who headed home to double the lead in the 68th minute.
Spalding had an effort that went wide of the post and Diamond saw his effort saved by Lewis. Smith hooked the ball over the bar and Chris Reeves was through but shot tamely at goal.
A dangerous run by Diamond ended with a corner and at the other end just before the final whistle Smith saw his shot blocked.
