Sandy Ladies let lead slip at Letchworth

Sandy Ladies let a lead slip to lose 2-1 at Letchworth Garden City on Sunday in a match they deserved to get something from.

Sandy didn’t start well and were under intense pressure for the first 15 minutes of the match but goalkeeper Amie and the back four of Kirsty, Jade, Pearl and Lucy battled bravely and weathered the storm.

Sandy started to get into the match with a couple of good breaks and then on 21 minutes Katie put Faye through who hit a magnificent shot to put Sandy in front.

The rest of the first half was a real end to end battle with Kayleigh and Sophie, supported by Faye and Claire making chances for Amber and Katie and at the other end Amie made a great save from a corner on 37 minutes to keep Sandy’s nose in front.

A few minutes into the second half Letchworth conceded a penalty following a foul in the box but unfortunately Sandy failed to capitalise and the score remained one nil.

A few minutes later the referee seemed to ignore the assistant referee’s flag for offside and as a result Sandy conceded a corner from which Letchworth scored the equaliser with a really good header.

Amie made several good saves in this half but one in particular where she pushed onto the crossbar was a terrific stop.

On 75 minutes the Letchworth keeper made a great save from Chloe, who had come on for Sophie at half time, and Jenny, who had replaced Claire at the same time, also scuffed a shot.

On 82 minutes Sandy broke again and Chloe’s first effort came back off the post with the keeper beaten and her second effort from the rebound hit the crossbar.

After 86 minutes Letchworth got another corner and again scored but Sandy didn’t give up and on 89 minutes Faye had a chance to level but it just wasn’t Sandy’s day and yet again they lost when, at the very least, they deserved a point.

Player of the match was Amie again but several players were outstanding.
