Return of the Mak

PERFORMERS and Pints, a popular night which very much lives up to its name, celebrates its first anniversary tonight (Friday, June 17).

Promoter and performer Will Mak, formerly known as Will Makower, leads a typically diverse line-up as the night returns to the function room at The Old Coach House in Potton.

Tonight’s party will celebrate some of the finest acts to grace the Performers and Pints stage, with Greg Dougal, Expendable Friend and Karmadillo joining Will himself.

Regulars at the night will know what to expect from Will, who has been described as a heady cocktail of James Morrison, John Legend and Jamie Cullum.

Will blends the sounds of these artists and adds a twist of his own to create a unique package of soul, funk, power pop and other styles besides.

Greg Dougal hails from Hitchin and plays guitar pop with jazz and soul touches, rounded off with his own inimitable vocals.

Greg played at Performers and Pints back in July last year and will be playing the opening slot.

Cambridge performer Expendable Friend combines ethereal, haunting melodies with raw, honest lyrics, and last appeared at the night back in September last year.

Karmadillo, who is also from Cambridge, has been described as ‘the Divine Comedy meets Noah and the Whale with Frank Zappa looking on as an approving grandad.’

Brilliant and bonkers in equal measure, he was crowned busking champion at last year’s Cambridge Busking Festival, and plays a charango, a kind of lute that originates from Peru.

Tickets are £3.50 on the door and the doors open at 8pm for an 8.30pm start.

This four-piece outfit specialise in their own interpretations of popular rock and blues tracks from every decade since the two styles began. The Bedford band play in a back-to-basics fashion with guitar, bass, harmonica and drums, and not a special effect to be heard.

Over in Stotfold, meanwhile, The Beatniks will be performing at The Chequers tonight, while The Sharks will be entertaining punters at The Engineer’s Arms in Henlow tomorrow night.

Looking ahead, highly rated comedian and pianist Matt Black will be performing at The Bell pub in Sandy on Friday, June 24.

Metal fans, meanwhile, can see the big four legends of the rock scene at an event that is within easy reach of Chronicle Country this summer.

Yes, be very excited because Sonsiphere is going to rock your socks off, literally.

Running from July 8 to 10 the festival will give revellers the opportunity to see Metallica, Slayer, Megadeath and Anthrax. And that’s just the first night’s entertainment. Held in the grounds of Knebworth House in Hertfordshire the festival will also feature performances from geek rock heroes Weezer, Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro and many, many more.

Since its inception Sonsiphere has proved that it is more than just your average rock festival, putting Abba tribute act Bjorn Again alongside top names in rock and metal in its first year. The comedy line-up is also a force to be reckoned with and this year panel show favourite Bill Bailey will deliver his own unique brand of humour to the amassed throng of rock fans.
