Discovery rocks basis of couples’ marriages

Actors and actresses are bringing a comedy to life at their theatrical base.

Henlow Amateur Theatrical Society members are putting the finishing touches on their production of When We Are Married.

They will perform the farcical comedy, which is based on barbed satire of smug British conservatism, at their base, Henlow Theatre in Henlow Camp.

Set in Yorkshire in 1908, three nouveau riche couples are celebrating their silver wedding anniversaries together.

The six tend to look down on anyone who does not come up to their high moral and religious standard. They are especially critical towards those who advocate a break from the repressive sexual taboos of the era.

All three couples were married in the same chapel on the same morning. They even had their photographs taken together and so for their silver anniversary, a photographer from the local newspaper is coming to recreate the moment twenty-five years on.

But ahead of him arrives the terrible news that the minister who conducted each service all those years ago was not actually authorised to do so and subsequently these six pillars of the community have in fact been living in sin.

Their efforts to hide this and their eventual comeuppance provide hearty laughs.

Will the couples grab an opportunity to marry the partners they have spent all their years with or will the news unravel their once strong relationships?

Performances are on Friday, September 28 and Saturday, September 29 as well as on Friday, October 5 and Saturday, October 6. The doors will open at 7.15pm and all performances will start at 8pm.
