You can bank on some quality gigs!

THERE can be few better occasions than a Bank Holiday Weekend to let your hair down and well and truly rock.

Rock covers band Gunslinger could not have chosen a more opportune time to introduce their new permanent line-up to venues around Chronicle Country then, as they prepare to perform for punters at The Crown in Biggleswade tomorrow (Saturday, April 23).

Andy King from crack rock covers band Hot For Teacher and Mark Rogers from Grounded will feature as the band bring renditions of some rock classics to the table, including numbers from the likes of Cream, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple.

Going from classic rock to classic pop, Ickwell Cricket Club will be the place to be for fans of a popular Swedish foursome from the 1970s and 1980s, also tomorrow.

Yes, devotees of “Frida” Lyngstad, Björn Kristian Ulvaeus, “Benny” Andersson and Agnetha Åse Fältskog will feel right at home with Almost Abba, a four-piece who blend classic Abba tracks with disco favourites from the 1980s.

From Voulez Vous to Waterloo, the Potton-based group are sure to entertain and will be accompanied by DJ Ray K, who will throw some additional cover classics into the mix.

From one fab four to another Fab Four tribute act that is sure to strike a note will be Like The Beatles, who are set to take centre stage at the Ivy Leaf Club in Langford tomorrow.

Like The Beatles have been said to be as close to the original band as it is possible to be. From the obsessive attention to detail in the musicianship and characterisation to the replica costumes, instruments and equipment, the band are completely dedicated to bringing audiences the most technically accurate experience of The Beatles as is humanly possible.

Being largely a band of brothers, the group’s close family dynamic helps create the on-stage camaraderie that fans have always associated with The Beatles.

From their earliest days in Liverpool to the heady last days in Abbey Road Studios, Like The Beatles recreate it all with diligence and respect, to the point that, it is often said, the audience loses itself in the music and forgets about the tribute band. That’s the aim, anyway.

Like The Beatles like to give the audience a broad picture of The Beatles’ history and have been known to include two or three costume changes in one set.

What with tomorrow being St George’s Day and all, could there be a better day to celebrate the talents and achievements of one of England’s greatest ever bands?

Entry fees are £5 for members and £8 for non-members.

It would surely be Madness not to have a mosey on down to Potton and District Club tomorrow, where seven-piece ska outfit The Refinements will be representing all that was – and is– special about the likes of Suggs and company, Bad Manners, The Beat, and, er, The Specials.

The Refinements hail from north London and promise a set of positive, upbeat ska tracks that punters will find it difficult not to dance to.

A fine blend of rock covers and more personal original material will also be on the menu at The Cornerstone in Shefford tomorrow, as 3 Days of Freedom arrive to rock the joint.

Described as one of Bedfordshire’s most unique and freshest sounding rock bands, the group perform tracks from artists and acts as diverse as The Dandy Warhols, U2, The Foo Fighters and Travis.

Performing regular plugged and acoustic sets in venues around the area and beyond, the band have received some acclaim, especially singer Kathryn James, who is tipped for a bright future.

Over at the Plough in Biggleswade, meanwhile, the pub’s regular folk session, held on the last Monday of every month, will be making an appearance for the Easter weekend on April 25.
