Dr Robert Lewis, 49, is working at Larksfield Surgery in Stotfold, but since allegations were first made in 2013 he has been working under set conditions.

Last Friday he appeared at Luton Crown Court, when 20 new allegations of indecent assault were put to him and he pleaded not guilty.

He had already pleaded not guilty to 17 charges and his trial had been fixed for October 26 at Luton Crown Court.

The trial on the 37 charges is expected to last about six weeks.

The charges cover four years between 1999 and 2003. The first allegations that were made related to pre employment medicals he carried out.

The doctor, who was arrested at his Shefford home, sat in the well of the court for the short hearing and was not required to go into the dock.

He was released on bail with conditions that he must not contact any of the complainants.

Under conditions imposed by the General Medical Council while court proceedings are ongoing, Dr Lewis must notify the GMC promptly of any post he accepts for which registration with the GMC is required and provide the contact details of his employer and the NHS England Area Team on whose Medical Performers List he is included.

Except in life threatening emergencies, he must not undertake an intimate examination of a female patient without a fully trained medical practitioner chaperone being present.
