This golden garden has first prize

ONCE could be lucky, twice could be a fluke but winning a prize in the Biggleswade Chronicle’s Garden of the Year competition three years running is an amazing green-fingered success!

June and Derek McDonald of Station Road in Langford are the overall winners for Chronicle Country – and they are also celebrating their golden wedding anniversary.

In a stroke of bad luck their car was written off in an accident on the way to receive their award. Fortunately they have now recovered and can enjoy their beautiful garden.

June, 69, said: “We’ve got all these trophies and we will have to get another shelf to put them on! It was an absolute surprise.”

The couple have both been gardening all of their lives and now Derek, 78, focuses on the vegetables while June nurtures the flowers. They grow all kinds of vegetables, roses, fuchsias, dahlias and plenty of other flowers. This year they also have golden roses to mark their anniversary.
