The dwindling number of venues in the United Kingdom continues to be a talking point in 2024, as we take a look at some of those locations loved and lost in Bedfordshire.
From reading anecdotes online about the various venues on offer, it could be fair to say that during the early ‘00s there was a strong dance music community across the area, especially reading tales of just how mighty Castaways in Souldrop was, despite its remote location.
While a couple of locations may have survived, regulars will no doubt tell you that there is a world of difference between going to Time Out on Bedford High Street and going to (according to Google Maps) a Slug and Lettuce - with all respect to Slug and Lettuce.
We’ve taken a look through Google Maps, websites including UK Decay and Dead Pubs of Bedfordshire to bring 13 venues that were loved and lost over time in the area.

9. The 33 Arts Centre
The 33 Arts Centre, Luton, was a small performance space (maximum capacity of about 70) became established as a music venue both for Jazz and Punk music events, as well as fringe theatre. | NationalWorld

10. Matrix Records
As written by UK Decay on their post about punk venues in the Bedfordshire area: "Set up by ‘Plastic records’ and UK Decay to provide the Punk community with all their needs here in Luton as opposed to having to go down to London to get them. At least that was the plan!" | UK Decay

11. The Hibbert Arms
The Hibbert Arms was a mainstay in the Luton area, however according to Google the pub is now "permanently closed." | WhatPub?

12. The Parrot
The almost unusual location of The Parrot on Whipperley Ring in Luton was closed in 2016 with planning permission at the time suggesting it be redeveloped into housing. | Google Maps
