2PM UPDATE: Collision on A1 at Sandy

A PEDESTRIAN was hospitalised after he was hit by a car.

The incident occurred on Saturday, July 7 on the northbound carriageway of the A1 by Sandy.

The East of England Ambulance Service was called to the dual carriageway near to the New Road junction at 9.54pm.

Former police officer, James Malone, saw the collision and was first on the scene. He gave the young man emergency first aid.

James, from Church Path in Sandy, said: “He was crossing the road from the petrol station on foot. He was in lane two when he got struck by a vehicle.”

The driver stopped his car and James spun his car round to help and to block the lane. He started doing first aid on the man until the emergency services arrived.

Three ambulance crews from Kempston, one from Biggleswade and Mapas Helimedix attended the scene.

Ambulance spokesman, Gary Sanderson, said: “The man, who we believe to be in his 20s, was treated and stabilised at the roadside by the ambulance and helimedix crews before he was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital for further care.”
