999 air crew fly in to help rugby casualty

An airborne medical crew flew to the scene of a sporting injury in Biggleswade yesterday to help a stricken rugby player.

The Magpas Helimedix team of doctor Maria Smith and paramedic Simon Standen worked with land-based ambulance staff ambulance crew who had responded to an emergency call after landing at the scene at 4.46pm.

Their patient was a man in his 30s who was in severe back pain after a fall while playing rugby.

The teams worked to protect the man’s spine before he was taken by road to the Lister Hospital in Stevenage.

On arrival at the hospital, he was a stable condition.
