Actor stars in epic wartime tale

STEVEN Spielberg’s new epic war film stars an actor who grew up in Gamlingay in the leading role.

Jeremy Irvine, 21, plays Albert in the First World War picture. He plays a lad who is too young to serve in the war but whose horse, Joey, is sold to the Army and sent to serve in the trenches.

The former Church Street resident and Bedford Modern School student has been nominated for Young British Performer of the Year at the London Film Critics Awards 2012.

And the film, which also stars the likes of David Thewlis, Benedict Cumberbatch, Emily Watson and Tom Hiddleston, has been nominated for Best Picture at this year’s Golden Globes.

Jeremy’s former teacher Helen Rees-Bidder, director of performance arts faculty at the school, said: “It was a privilege to witness Jeremy’s growth and development as an actor, culminating in his sensitive and moving portrayal of Romeo in Year 13. He has such energy and passion and was determined to make his own luck.”
