Adisa has a way with words!

A PERFORMANCE poet brought creative writing to life in a school workshop.

Pupils from Potton Lower School, Burgoyne Middle School in Potton and Robert Peel Lower School in Sandy spent the day at Sandye Place Academy on Monday, May 28.

The small groups of Gifted and Talented youngsters joined students from Sandye Place.

They were coached by performance poet Adisa, who often visits schools to encourage students to enjoy writing creatively.

Joanna Kalson – head of Year 8 at Sandye Place who helped to organise the workshop – said: “The pupils who attended have all shown genuine promise in creative writing and some potential for the future.

“Adisa was brilliant – he really inspired the students.”

The performance poet made the youngsters – all aged from eight to 11 – think about writing in a different way, Mrs Kalson said.

She added: “I’m an English teacher here myself and the pupils know that when we teach creative writing and English, much of the focus will be on sentence structure, grammar and punctuation.

“But this was very different.

“The pupils’ inspiration meant that they could write for most of the school day and they very much enjoyed doing so.”

Adisa, who grew up in Luton, concentrates on what poetry can teach pupils in his workshops.

He likes to use poetry to increase young people’s understanding and awareness of the world around them.

He believes that by using poetry in everyday life children can improve their sense of self and contribute more to society.

The academy now hopes to run Gifted and Talented workshops on a termly basis.
