Administrator confirms Blockbuster store will not be spared axe after all

The Biggleswade branch of Blockbuster is to close next month, administrators Deloitte have confirmed.

There was relief around the town last month when Deloitte revealed that the Market Square store was not among the 129 outlets
originally earmarked for closure.

But following a U-turn the popular DVD and games rental store will shut for good on March 21. The closure will result in the axing of 10 jobs.

Regular customers and observers have spoken of their disappointment at hearing the news.

Biggleswade deputy mayor Councillor Hazel Ramsay said: “This really is disappointing news ,especially for the staff. It will be a large store for a retailer to take on and it will probably need some refurbishment.

“I have not heard of any company being interested but I hope it will not stand empty for too long.”

Martin Thomas, chairman of the Biggleswade Chamber of Trade said: “The chamber is sad to hear the news about Blockbuster and its staff losing their jobs.”

Supermarket giant Morrisons is buying 49 former Blockbuster stores but a spokesman for the firm declined to comment on rumours that the Biggleswade branch is one of these.
