All female choir will perform in cathedral after win

An a cappella choir triumphed in a competition.

Potton based Phoenix Chorus, an all female enterprise, took the joint top prize at Barnardo’s Adult Choir Competition in Birmingham.

The group’s president, Sue Wilson, said: “It was a fantastic day and we’re very proud to have been joint winners of the female class trophy in such a high calibre competition.”

Phoenix Chorus won a place to sing at Barnardo’s Christmas Concert, which will be in Westminster Cathedral on December 5.

Victoria Veats, Barnardo’s UK events manager, described the choir’s performance as “magnificent” and Phoenix’s musical director, Lynda Wood, said: “There were 15 choirs in the finals and the standard of singing was high so it is fabulous that Phoenix were awarded the top prize.”

In May the choir will compete against 21 other women’s barbershop choruses at the Sweet Adelines International Regional Convention in Gateshead.

Phoenix Chorus meet every Tuesday at 7.30pm. Potential new members can hear them sing at Potton Lower School. For details call Caroline Donovan on 07921 834290 or visit www.phoenixladies.co.uk
