The plot focuses on Serafina Delle Rose, a Sicilian who runs her own sewing business and manages the home for her 12-year-old daughter, Rosa, and her husband, Rosario, who hauls a banana truck.

The opening scene takes place one evening with Serafina awaiting Rosario’s return for a romantic dinner.

But events take a tragic turn as the local priest, Father De Leo, and the neighbours arrive to inform Serafina that her husband has been shot dead at the wheel of his truck.

The action then fast forwards three years to show Serafina’s efforts to come to terms with her loss, raising her daughter and falling in love with someone else.
