Brave neighbour assaulted thwarting burglary attempt

DETECTIVES are appealing for help after a man was assaulted as he prevented a raid on a neighbour’s house.

The attack took place at around 8.45pm on Tuesday, when the victim heard someone trying to break in to his next door neighbour’s home.

He immediately confronted the offender at the rear of the property, where he was threatened with a crowbar.

Despite the threat he bravely gave chase and was struck around the head. In self defence he was able to strike his attacker and continued his pusuit.

The offender fled the scene, getting into a silver car believed to be a Ford Mondeo Estate, which had been parked in Blunham Road.

The victim of the assault was still chasing his attacker. As he reached the car he was able to smash the driver’s window, but in doing so he suffered lacerations to his arm as the car sped off.

The offender is described as white, of medium to stocky build with a strong Eastern European accent and he spoke with broken English. The man was wearing dark clothing and had a balaclava covering his face.

The victim was praised for his bravery by police.

Detective Constable Paul Arrowsmith who is investigating the burglary, said: “The victim of this attack showed considerable courage in chasing the offender, but he did have to be taken to hospital to receive treatment for the injuries that he sustained during the incident.

“I’d like to hear from anyone who was close to West Way or Blunham Road, but I’m particularly keen to speak to a potential witness who saw the car as it sped away.

“This witness spoke to the victim and passed on part of the car’s index number. We believe that the witness drives a 4x4 vehicle and is regularly in Moggerhanger. If you are that person, please do get in touch.”

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has further information should contact DC Arrowsmith at Dunstable Police Station on 01582 473053, text to 07786 200011 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
