BREAKING: residents urged to close windows over serious fire in Clifton

BREAKING: Firefighters are still tackling a large fire at a farmhouse in Shefford Road, Clifton.

While the main part of the fire is now under control due to the structural collapse of the building small pockets fire are still being fought. There have been no casualties.

Four fire appliances were sent to the fire after Fire Control received a call at 12:10 today. This has since been made up to five fire engines, the Bedford Aerial Platform, the Incident Command Unit and a water carrier.

When firefighters arrived they found the roof of a large house, approximately 50m by 30m, well on fire. They began by using defensive tactics to get the fire under control and have recently moved onto more offensive tactics to combat the fire. They are using breathing apparatus, two hose reels, one covering jet to fight the fire.

Due to concerns over smoke residents of properties in Maple Close, Birch Close, Chapel Close and Spring Road, Clifton have been advised to keep their windows closed. There is no risk to these properties.

While not directly threatened by the fire or smoke Samuel Whitbread Academy is effected by the current closure of Shefford Road, Clifton and parents are being advised that this may affect picking up children after school today.
