Building staff get out and about restoring heathland

The staff Kier Homes in Tempsford, headed down to the RSPB’s headquarters in Sandy.

They spent a strenuous day at The Lodge reserve working alongside volunteers from the RSPB as they attempted to restore an area of heathland to its former glory.

Nick Moore, deputy managing director for the house building company, said: “Kier has a long-standing partnership with the RSPB and has even produced a best practice guide to help the industry reduce its impact on wildlife and their habitats.

“It was great to see our team putting that into practice and getting stuck in for such a worthwhile cause.”

Having removed a considerable amount of unwanted birch it is hoped that species of breeding woodlarks, nightjars and Dartford warblers will once again be encouraged to make the site their home.

Mark Brandon, visitor and publicity manager at the nature reserve, said: “Over the last ten years the RSPB has been working to restore the heathland from a former conifer plantation and, recently, heather that was lost has begun to bloom.

“The team should feel proud to have made a real contribution to the ongoing success of this project.”
