Care homes to be handed back

Care provider Bupa Care Homes currently manages three care homes in Chronicle Country – Abbotsbury in Biggleswade, Allison House in Sandy and The Birches in Shefford.

Its contract finished in 2010, but since then it has agreed various extensions with the council.

However, it has decided not to extend the contract again when it runs out on July 31.

Ruth Yates, director of partnerships at Bupa Care Homes, said: “We are committed to 
ensuring a smooth handover to a new operator with no disruption to the homes’ residents.

“We are proud to have provided excellent care to many hundreds of residents in the homes over the past 14 years.

“We would like to thank all the excellent people who work in the homes for their support and dedication over that time.”

Julie Ogley, director of social care, health and housing at Central Beds Council, said: “The council is preparing to take back the management of these council-owned residential care homes for older people that have been managed by Bupa on our behalf for 14 years.

“Our priority is to ensure the wellbeing of all of the homes’ residents and staff by ensuring a smooth handover to the council.”

Further details on the proposals will go to the Executive in April.
