Celebrating at their leisure centre

LONGTIME members of a leisure centre will celebrate its 15th birthday on Saturday (February 18).

The Saxon Pool and Leisure Centre in Biggleswade will mark 15 years since it opened and 18 members will take part in the celebrations.

The centre was opened on February 18, 1997 by swimmer and Olympic gold medalist Duncan Goodhew.

The members have all belonged to the centre since that day.

At the time the centre consisted of a 25m swimming pool, a teaching pool, cafe, sports bar, workout studio and a 40-station gym.

Since then a series of developments have taken place.

These have included the launch of the nationally recognised Body Training Systems workout classes in 2000 and the opening of a refurbished 100-station gym by former Boyzone singer Shane Lynch in 2006.

The former sports bar was also converted into a second workout studio in 2003.

Stevenage Leisure took over the management of the site in 2001 and last year new gym equipment was installed.

The leisure centre and pool now caters for more than 300,000 visits a year.
