Christmas shopping will be in Tesco store

A TOWN’S new supermarket should be open by Christmas – despite abundant rumours suggesting a two year delay.

Tesco, the major chain that will be opening a store on the former RKB site in Sandy, has quashed claims that there will be a prolonged delay.

Central Bedfordshire Council gave Tesco planning permission to open a store in Sandy in March last year.

Rumours of the delay quickly spread around Sandy after it became commonly understood that some individuals had received letters from Tesco stating the lengthy postponement, which would have moved the opening date back to 2014.

Louise Gosling, Tesco’s regional corporate affairs manager, confirmed that Tesco has not written letters about a delay to anyone in Sandy and that a two year delay is not anticipated.

She said: “Our plans aren’t delayed until 2014 and we still want to crack on as soon as we can.

“It’s taken much longer than we expected and we know local people are disappointed, as are we.

“Planning negotiations are still being finalised with Central Beds Council but they are very close to completion.

“We hope to start building in the next few months and to be open before Christmas this year.”
