Co-ordinator hails Street Watch progress

The co-ordinator of a neighbourhood patrol scheme is pleased that it can continue on a regional level.

Phil Howard, co-ordinator for Street Watch in Shefford was dismayed when the scheme was axed at a national level.

Two years ago Street Watch schemes started operating around the country, and the scheme in Shefford has enjoyed support from the community.

Volunteers can patrol their towns and villages and keep an eye on antisocial behaviour and crime.

But last month the Street Watch National Co-ordinator confirmed that the scheme will no longer be running on a national level due to funding cutbacks.

After discussions between Street Watch Bedfordshire and Bedfordshire Police it has been confirmed that the programme can still run in the county.

Phil said: “We can continue to serve the people of Shefford with our patrols.”
